RealmBinder vs Kanka

Kanka is a campaign and worldbuilding wiki: around twenty kinds of entry, maps, calendars and fine-grained permissions, free for unlimited campaigns. RealmBinder keeps the campaign too, but builds the record from your sessions instead of asking you to file it.

The short version

Choose Kanka if

You are a GM who wants to catalogue the world in detail, with families, organisations, abilities, in-world calendars and per-player visibility on every entry, and you want it free.

Choose RealmBinder if

You want the record without the filing. You write or record what happened, and the entries, links, timeline and recap come out of it, ready for the table to read.

What Kanka does well

Kanka is free for unlimited campaigns and entries, and campaigns are private by default. It has around twenty kinds of entry, from characters to abilities, calendars with custom months, seasons and moons, and visibility per member and per role, with a view-as-player preview. Paid plans cost little, the code is open source and it is hosted in Germany.

Where RealmBinder is different

Entries come out of the story

In Kanka every entry is one you create, fill in and relate by hand. In RealmBinder the characters, places, items and factions come out of your session notes, each linked to the sessions it appears in, with a summary written from them.

The session is the main event

Kanka keeps sessions as journals you write. RealmBinder starts there: paste rough notes and get a written note with your original kept beside it, upload a recording, or answer an interview when nobody took notes.

Upkeep, suggested

When a note says a quest is done or a character died, RealmBinder suggests the change and waits for someone at the table to apply it, so the record keeps up without a tidy-up after every game.

Pricing

Kanka

Free for unlimited campaigns and entries, with ads and some limits. Paid plans upgrade campaigns to premium: US$4.99 a month for one, US$9.99 for three, US$24.99 for seven. Yearly billing is about 17% less.

RealmBinder

Free during closed beta, with payments switched off. Launch prices and plans have not been set. Beta tables hear from us before anything changes.

Moving over from Kanka

Kanka exports a campaign as Markdown. Import those files into RealmBinder and choose, note by note, whether to keep each one as it is or have it rewritten. Duplicates are caught before anything is saved.

How we checked

We wrote this from Kanka's own pages on 18 October 2026. Products change, and we would rather be corrected than out of date. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

RealmBinder uses AI to write up sessions, build the compendium and answer questions. What it touches, and where it can be wrong.
